Welcome to KnowledgeCATS

The purpose of this site is to bring together vital know-how for capturing and transferring implicit and tacit knowledge.  It is both a roadmap, providing the industry "lay of the land" along with links to key people and tools; and a learning center, providing information about and actionable how-to on a variety of knowledge subjects.

It is a "work in progress" and labor of love for me (Pam Holloway).  My goal is to help business professionals make sense of the variety of tools and solutions at their disposal and figure out what makes sense for them.  I also want to support and help provide greater visibility for the community of consultants, toolmakers, and trainers who provide knowledge capture, knowledge transfer and other knowledge management related solutions.

The Challenge

Almost every company in every industry is facing the same challenge - the retirement of key people who take with them years of valuable knowledge and experience.

Some of the things that go out the door with them include:

  • The “how-to” for a particular job or function
  • Historical context – the “how we got here” and “why we do things this way”
  • Special insights and techniques for accomplishing work and preventing or solving problems
  • Relationship capital - Rich relationships with customers, vendors and other people in the organization that has developed over many years and contexts

You’re aware of the problem and maybe you’ve even taken steps to do something about it. Maybe you’re banking on the fact that you’ll still have access to them after they “officially” exit the organization. The question is - do you really want to be in such a vulnerable position? A position where you realize critical knowledge is lost “after the fact” a position where you are dependent on someone or something outside the organization and outside your control?

I’m sure that if you knew you had a cost-and-time-effective solution for capturing this critical knowledge, then the answer would surely be a resounding YES! Good news, KnowledgeCATS delivers just that!

"In the next 10 years, 43% of the workforce (in the US) will be eligible for retirement and five hundred of the largest companies can expect to lose 50% of their senior management."

Tom Euker - Understanding the Impact of Tacit Knowledge Loss, Knowledge Management Review, March 2007

“Most of the knowledge that is most critical to organizations is housed in the heads of employees. When they leave, so does the knowledge.”
